Hey guys…let’s talk about hair.

My mom has been a hair designer for 37 years. Most of her clients came to her and had been washing their hair too often. It seems like something simple, but a lot of people don’t wash their hair properly. The real reason your hair looks and feel so darn fabulous after a trip to the salon is that your stylist (or hairapist) understands that the key to happy hair is a well-executed shampoo — that’s with I have consulted the pros to find out the best tips for shiny, silky, beautiful hair.

You’re Probably Washing Your Hair Too Much

My mom always says “you’re washing your hair too much”. Even celebrities with flawless-looking hair are probably only washing their hair three times a week. Believe it or not, our hair actually produces more oil when washed too often. Less is more. Think of all the money you will save by spreading out your shampoos! Thin hair can we washed a couple of days a week and thick curly hair should be washed once a week. Condition every day!

Shampoo

Per one of the top hair designer’s at my mom’s salon, most importantly; wash with a sulfate-free, non-grocery store brand, shampoo. (Spend money on your shampoo and conditioners. You get what you pay for.) A good shampoo is like insurance for your hair. You pay will pay top dollar to colored or cut. Maintaining it in between salon visits is worth the investment.

Do you know the purpose of shampoo? It’s not for cleaning your strands of hair but actually for cleaning your scalp. You are technically washing your head.

When washing, add water to the shampoo because most expensive shampoos are more condensed. You just add water to the head with shampoo on it.. Will make it easier to lather the hair. Use your fingertips, not nails, at the roots. Gently pull through the ends. ( if you are using a toning shampoo, let it sit for a few mins in the hair.) rinse thoroughly. You will feel the hair squeak when clean. “Squeaky clean”.

Think back to the last time you were at the hair salon, head in the sink, eyes closed, enjoying your stylist gently massaging your scalp. It feels good, doesn’t it? She isn’t massaging the strands of your hair, she is working the shampoo directly into your scalp.

Conditioner

The conditioner is a completely different animal. You are meant to apply conditioner to the bottom of your hair and tips; avoiding the scalp.

Condition with a really good conditioner. No need to put at the root since your sebaceous glands oil your roots themselves. Let the conditioner sit in the ends for a few mins. Comb through with a fine-tooth comb. Especially for the curly-haired women out there. Rinse out. (If your hair is really dry, leave the conditioner on for about an hour with a plastic cap on. Then jump back in the shower to rinse out. I always let my conditioner sit for a couple of minutes. I shave my legs, wash my face, then rinse it out well.

You can sleep in the conditioner as much as you want. Hair likes moisture since it’s already so dry by nature.

Curly Hair

If you have curly hair, the best thing you can do is brush or comb your hair in the shower while the conditioner is setting in. Rinse and just blot dry and style with gel or mouse. Do not brush again. If you aren’t doing this, your hair game is about to change.

If you use a non-cotton towel when drying, you will see less frizz. Go easy with the hairbrush. Have you ever been sitting at the salon and your stylist is ripping the brush through your head? NO. The softer and more gentle you are when brushing your hair post-shower, the less breakage and frizz you’ll create. Thus, you will have smoother and softer hair. My mom would recommend a wet brush If you plan on using any heat on your hair after the shower, apply a protectant.

Products

For Heat:

The senior stylists at my mom’s salon recommend most gels; Wow, Keune, White Sands, Joico Heat Spray, Verb Dry Oil, and Moroccan Oil. It really depends on the texture of hair and the results you want. If you have frizzy hair, WOW is phenomenal.
